Her Life: Maya Angelou was born on April 4th 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of only three her parents divorced and her and her brother were sent to live with there grandma in Arkansas. Being African American she faced many hardships dealing with racism in the south. Some major events happened in her life when she was young and she said those incidence made her the person she is today. Maya Angelou gave birth to her first son when she was only sixteen years old. At age 22 she married Tosh Angelou, but divorced a couple years later.

Influences: Later in her life Maya Angelou began to start reading poetry from Edgar Allen Poe and William Shakespeare and they became her inspiration to write. Angelou moved all throughout the world trying to start her writing addiction. She moved from New York where she was apart of the Harlem Writers Guild to Egypt then later to Ghana where she worked for the the University as an administrator and as an editor for th African Review. She moved back to America in 1964 where she helped Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fight against discrimination and racism in America. In January 1993, she became only the second poet in U.S. History to have the honor of writing and reciting original work at the Presidential Inauguration. All of her writing reflects her courage as a black woman. As she talks about her hardships when she was young she never did allow them from stopping who she is today. Its obvious that through her work as a person and as a poet she was simply a great example for all including African Americans.
