 1871-1900

About Me-

I am Stpehen Crane. I was born Novemeber 1st 1871Newark New Jersey. I am the son of Mary Peck and John Townley Crane. My father was a methodist Minester. Soon after my wonderfull father died my mother and my 13 siblings moved to Asbury Park New Jersey. My home is now a museum.

After Public schools i studied at Lafatyette College and Syracuse Universtity. There I studied liberal arts. unfortanatly I did not graduate, but i love to play for there baseball team. After i attempeted college i became a journalist. I was a journalist for The New York Tribune and New York Herald.

I loved Hamlin Garland he was a great influence to my writting. In his book "Crumbling Idols" he put forward a theory of realistic fiction which he called Veritism. Then i got thinking and i wrote "The realistic or veritist is really an optomist, a dream. He see's life in terms of what might be, as well as in term of what it is; but he writes of what is and, at he best suggests what is to be."

I have always been facinated in military history. That is what brought about most of my books. My first novel was not a very big hit . It was called "Maggie a girl of the streets:A new york story", But other authors did become attracted to this story. Such as William Dean Howells. My second book was "The Red Badge Of Courage." it was published in 1995 it is about the civil war, My third book was short stories on the war. It its called "The little Regiment" Published in 1896. My third book was "George's Mother" Which was one of my best, it was published in 1896. "The Third Violet" was published in 1997 it is about a young artist, and then there was "The Open Boat" Which was about the ship wreck i got in. It was published in 1898. I have a few other books such as "War is Kind" a book of poems about war, "Whillmoville" a story about childhood in a small town, and "Wounds in the Rain" about life as a corespondent.

As for the book "George's Mother", When i meet my love Cora Howorth Taylor,  She was reading this book. We where introduced by a journalist friend of mine whil i was in florida looking for a way to cuba, so i could report on what goes on over there. I autographed her book and it read "To and unamed sweetheart" and then began our love affair that lasted "till death do us part".

While in florda i was trying to find a way to Cuba. In the hotel i satyed i meet a captian. His name was Edward Murphy he was captain of the S.S Commodore. His boat was considered on of the best smuggling ships that went to cubas aid. So i signed on as an able seaman to cover my real mission as a reporter. We set out december 31 1896 But the ship sank at heavy sea, and that is what to book "The Open Boat" is about.

Cora and I then became Companions abd fellow jouranlists. She traveled with me to cover the Graeco- Turkish war in 1897, and the spansih war in 1898. We then setteled in engalnd. I soon became ill with Tuberculosis, and lived with it for the rest of my life. Untill 1900.

After Stephen Cranes death cora moved back to Jacksonville Florida and in 1910 She passed. Even thought Stephen and Cora did not get married she insisted that He grave say Cora Crane.

WAlKING IN THE SKY

Walking in the Sky

A Man in Strange Black Garb

Encountered a Radiant Form

Then His Step Where Eager

Bowed He Devoutly

"My lord" said he

But the Spirit Knew Him not.

I think this poem is about a man on judgement day.

He stand befor the lord and is eager to pass to heaven

But he did not make it because his heart was not with the lord.

"The Spirit Knew Him Not"
